Estonia is in a strict lockdown for a month

The Estonian government has decided to impose a severe lockdown on the whole territory from the day after Thursday for at least a month because of the the rapid spread of the variant strain of the new coronavirus originally identified in the United Kingdom, Prime Minister Kaya Kalas announced yesterday Monday.

“We have decided to close the country as much as possible,” said Ms Kalas, whose statements were broadcast live on the Estonian television network ETV +.

Under government decisions, all educational institutions will now deliver courses only digitally, with the exception of those for students with special needs. Parents were advised to send their children to daycare only when it was an absolute and urgent need.

All retail stores will close except those selling basic necessities, especially food and medicine. The goods can be delivered to customers only outdoors and in strict compliance with personal protection measures.

Cafes and restaurants will only be able to make deliveries at home. Indoor sports activities were banned. Citizens are advised to adhere to the chosen social distance when they are outside.

The country of 1.3 million has been registered so far 667 deaths due to COVID-19 out of a total of 76,183 SARS-CoV-2 cases.
