“ET de Varginha” can become Intangible Cultural Heritage in MG

The Varginha City Hall said, on Thursday (30), that it intends to register the “Case of the ET of Varginha” as a local Intangible Cultural Heritage.

According to the agency, “the Cultural Heritage Council of Varginha accepted requests from the local society to open studies to support the Municipal Registration Dossier”.

The episodes, which became known as “Caso Varginha”, occurred in January 1996, and involved sightings of Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs) and beings that did not look like humans or animals. These events made the place known worldwide as “the city of ET”.

Over the years, reports by the population and studies disseminated by the media, both nationally and internationally, have caused the city to shape itself around the episode.

The note states that “several actions were taken towards the construction of this image, such as the projection of architectural assets and urban furniture” related to extraterrestrials and UFOs. An example is the ET Memorial, inaugurated last year.

An American documentary called “Moment of Contact” (or “Momento do Contacto – O Caso Varginha”), by filmmaker James Fox, shows that the story of the sighting of extraterrestrials is still present, and encourages discussions and new reports.

In this context, registering the case as a local Intangible Heritage should help to keep the memory of the event, as well as directing the focus to heritage education.

“The ET case made our city known worldwide. Today we receive visits from tourists from all over, scholars of the case propagate the Varginha incident and it is up to us, public managers, to care for this illustrious visitor who chose our city to contribute”, said Mayor Vérdi Melo.

the case

On January 20, 1996, three girls spotted a strange creature as they cut across a vacant lot.

The being was short and slight, with a head disproportionate to its body size and large red eyes. Frightened, the girls fled the scene.

According to folklore, a young policeman found the creature and took it by the arm, without using protection, and took it to the Regional Hospital.

At dawn on the 21st, the alien would have been transferred to the Humanitas Hospital and then, lifeless, placed in a troop transport truck bound for the Escola de Sargento de Armas, in Três Corações.

On January 23, an Army convoy would have taken the creature to the State University of Campinas (Unicamp), where it would be studied.

Finally, on February 7th, the police officer who supposedly took the alien to the hospital was admitted in severe pain. He died days later.

For ufologists, the cause of death would have been contact with bacteria from the creature, which had been touched by him without protection.

The only sources of information are the reports of people in the region, who were spectators of the episode. No narrative has been confirmed by hospitals, the Army or Unicamp so far.
