Ethereum developers have decided on the date of the London hard fork

The planned London hard fork on the Ethereum mainnet is set for August 4, lead cryptocurrency developer Tim Beiko said. The upgrade is slated for block 12,965,000 to be released on that date. It was previously assumed that the launch of London on the main Ethereum network could take place before the end of this month.

Co-founder of the EthHub platform, Anthony Sassano, noted that the decision is still pending approval at a developer meeting on July 9th. Beiko added that it is advisable for the curators of clients to release updated software by this time.

London is the next hard fork after Berlin, which was activated on the Ethereum mainnet this April. In parallel, the latest update is being launched and tested on Ropsten, Goerli and Rinkeby testnets.

London includes several Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIP), the most notable of which is EIP 1559. It will introduce a new fee calculation mechanism to Ethereum to replace the existing auction system and burn most of the fees paid by users, instead of passing them to miners like It is happening now.

In addition, London will further delay the difficulty bomb, the activation of which would make it harder to mine cryptocurrency. Initially, it was proposed to abandon this aspect of the update in order to motivate users and miners to quickly move to the updated Ethereum 2.0 network with the Proof-of-Stake consensus mechanism. Nevertheless, given the fact that London directly affects the interests of miners, it was decided to postpone the activation of the difficulty bomb again.
