Ethereum developer Mikhail Kalinin has posted a request to include the code for EIP-3675, an official proposal to merge the current version of the network with Ethereum 2.0.

At the meeting on Friday, the developers will discuss a proposal that lays the groundwork for the merger of Ethereum 1.x with Ethereum 2.0. It is worth noting that, contrary to earlier assumptions, the merger may not take place this year.
Ethereum Foundation developer Tim Beiko, who is coordinating the updates, said the merger of the two versions of the network in 2021 is unlikely. “Everything has to go perfectly, it takes time,” he said.
Ethereum 2.0 Development Coordinator Danny Ryan noted that EIP-3675 is just one of many points in the merger process.
“Our challenge now is to ensure that the core specifications are in place so that the development process can move quickly after the London and Altair hard forks,” he said.
The London hard fork, scheduled for August 4th, includes the EIP-1559 proposal, which will destroy ETH when paying a base fee. This will reduce transaction fees, but at the same time miners’ income will decrease. The Altair update, which will be activated in the fall, will be the first ETH2 hard fork to bring minor but important changes to the new version of the network.
In May, Ethereum developers agreed to postpone the activation of the difficulty bomb, which was scheduled for this summer, until December, when the merger of ETH1 and ETH2 is to take place. If the merge is not ready by this time, the developers will still have to update the network. Probably, the development will go exactly according to this scenario. Last week, Beiko wrote that the merger in December will happen only “in the most optimistic scenario.” As Ryan notes, “there is still a lot to be done.”
As a reminder, in March Australian company Sigma Prime, the developer of Ethereum’s Lighthouse client, announced the first “merge transaction” between Ethereum 1.x and Ethereum 2.0.
