Ethernet Switch Sales Up 7.6% YoY

Experts of the analytical company IDC have summed up the results of the first quarter of this year in the Ethernet switch market. If IDC’s calculations are correct, sales of these devices reached $ 6.7 billion during this period. This is 7.6% more than in the first quarter of last year. Sales of enterprise-grade routers rose 14.4% year-on-year to $ 3.4 billion.

The growth of the Ethernet switch market is driven by continued demand for high-speed equipment. Thus, deliveries of 100 GbE switches for the year increased by 16.9%, if we count on the total number of ports. In monetary terms, the growth was 27.2%. 100 GbE switches account for 24.5% of the market. The 25 GbE and 50 GbE switches also showed impressive growth: shipments in quantitative terms (by number of ports) grew by 21.0%, revenue – by 28.0%.

It is significant that in the mature segment of switches operating at lower speeds, a different picture is observed. Shipment by number of 10 GbE ports increased 18.1% year on year, but revenue decreased 0.4%. Meanwhile, 10 GbE switches account for 23.3% of all revenue. 1 GbE switches were shipped 12.2% more (in terms of the number of ports) than a year ago, but in monetary terms, sales decreased by 2.4%. 1 GbE switches account for 35.0% of all revenue.

In terms of vendor ratings, Cisco is the leader. At the end of the quarter, it owns 49.3% of the Ethernet switch market. The second place is occupied by Huawei, but its share is significantly less – 7.9%. Arista Networks is in third place with 7.6%, and HPE is in fourth with 6.0%. Juniper closes the top five with 2.6%. The distribution of the market between the main manufacturers is clearly shown in the diagram:
