The Ethiopian government announced today that the army has captured a city in the province of Tigray, something that is happening for the first time in many months in this area where a bloody conflict is raging.
This development diminishes the hopes of peace after the rebellion of the guerrillas of the People’s Liberation Front of Tigray (TPLF) who yesterday, Monday, announced that they had left the neighboring provinces of Amhara and Afar and demanded a ceasefire. So far, TPLF has not commented on Addis Ababa’s announcement.
“Fearless Ethiopian defense forces and security forces in the Amhara area, after ousting enemy forces, have captured the city of Alamata,” the government communications service said, adding that it was now the turn of Ambergele, another area of Tigray.
Although unconfirmed, the retreat of the rebels from Amhara and Afar has raised hopes that peace talks could begin to end the war and serious humanitarian crisis that has lasted more than a year.
On Monday, the government ruled that the TPLF’s announcement was intended to cover up the military’s military failures. Around the end of October, the Tigris rebels claimed to have occupied large areas and were about 200 kilometers from the capital Addis Ababa.
