Ethiopia: At least 750 civilians killed in the northern part of the country in the second half of 2021

At least 750 civilians were killed or executed between July and December 2021 in two northern Ethiopian provinces where war has been raging for 16 months, according to a report released by the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission on Thursday.

This independent organization, affiliated with the Ethiopian government, has been conducting investigations in the Afar and Amhara provinces, where since November 2021 the conflict that broke out in November 2020 in neighboring Tigray, between provincial rebels and pro-government forces .

The commission said it had “confirmed the deaths of at least 403 civilians and the slight or serious injury to another 309 of heavy artillery fire, airstrikes and drone strikes by the warring parties in violation of international humanitarian law”.

“In some areas of the Afar and Amhara provinces covered by the investigation, at least 346 civilians have been the victims of illegal and extrajudicial executions by the warring parties, mainly by Tigray forces,” the source said.

The commission also accused the Tigris rebels of “widespread, brutal and systematic sexual and sexist violence, mainly of gang-raping women of all ages, including girls and the elderly, in parts of the Afar and Amhara provinces under their control”.

He also noted that “kidnappings and enforced disappearances in a way that constitutes a war crime and a crime against humanity”.

War broke out in northern Ethiopia in November 2020, when Ethiopian Prime Minister Abi Ahmed sent the federal army to overthrow the regional authorities of the province of Tigray, which comes from the Liberation Front of the People of the Tigris. influence in government in Addis Ababa from 1991 until 2018 when Abby was elected,

The Ethiopian Prime Minister declared his victory after the occupation of Mecca, the capital of the province, by the federal army. But TPLF guerrillas regained control of the city in June and continued their advance into Amhara and Afar provinces, as they approached Addis Ababa.

They announced in December that they were retreating to Tigray, but the following month launched an offensive against Afar, responding, they claimed, to attacks by pro-government forces against their positions.

During the more than 16 months of conflict, tarnished by many atrocities, thousands were killed, millions displaced and hundreds of thousands found on the brink of starvation, according to the UN.
