The Ethiopian parliament decided today to lift the state of emergency that was imposed in the country in November when guerrillas from the province of Tigray threatened to reach Addis Ababa, the Foreign Ministry announced today.
“The Ethiopian parliament today approved the lifting of the six-month-old state of emergency,” the ministry wrote on its official Twitter account.
The vote in parliament followed a proposal by Ethiopian Prime Minister Abi Ahmed’s cabinet to ease the six-month-old state of emergency earlier in the day.
A state of emergency was declared in Ethiopia on November 2 when fighters of the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) captured two strategically important cities on the road leading to the capital Addis Ababa.
Mass arrests of Tigris residents in Addis Ababa and the rest of the country have sparked a wave of convictions by international human rights groups.
