It exploded on Sunday Etnaspewing ash over Catania, the largest city in eastern Sicily, which led to the suspension of all flights at the city’s airport.
In accordance with Italian National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV), the cloud cover obstructed the view of the eruption, while the ash, apart from Catania, also fell on other inhabited areas on the slopes of the volcano. No injuries have been reported so far.
Citizens in Andrano and Bianca Villa reported hearing loud bangs coming from the volcano on Sunday, Italy’s ANSA news agency reported, while the Institute noted that monitoring had picked up signs of increased tremor activity in recent days.
Italy’s national Civil Protection agency had warned on Thursday that there could be “sudden” changes in Mount Etna’s activity due to increased volcanic activity.
