The 17th eruption of Mount Etna, Europe’s tallest active volcano (3,350 meters), occurred on Thursday over a period of about two months and the new images are awe-inspiring.
A cloud of ash reached a height of 9 kilometers, as reported by the Italian agency Ansa. The ashes reached neighboring Catania and the airspace at the airport in the Sicilian city was closed.
The INGV Institute of Volcanology stated that this is the 17th “frenzy” of its volcano Etna, in the last phase of its activity that started in mid-February.
Meanwhile, a group of seven young people climbed the volcano to see the latest eruptions, disappeared and spent the night outside, according to the agency. They were finally rescued on Thursday morning.
