EU agreed to extend duty-free imports of Ukrainian agricultural products, but with some restrictions

Ukrainian Prime Minister Denis Shmihal welcomed the deal reached overnight by the EU on imports into the bloc of Ukrainian agricultural products, calling it “good news” and saying it would allow Kiev to support its producers and to maintain its export levels. EU countries and the European Parliament agreed to extend for one more year, until June 2025, the exemption of Ukrainian products from tariffs, which has been in effect since 2022 and after the Russian invasion of Ukraine. This time, however, the EU also adopted protection mechanisms, which concern the imports of particularly sensitive products, such as oats, corn, honey and semolina, but not wheat and barley, as requested by MEPs. One such mechanism is the imposition of an emergency brake on imports of poultry, eggs and sugar.
