Air transport in the EU recorded a significant decrease of 73% in 2020 compared to 2019, according to Eurostat data released today.
To prevent the spread of COVID-19, countries around the world have taken restrictive measures since the beginning of 2020, with the result that the aviation industry is severely affected.
All EU member states recorded large reductions in 2020 compared to 2019. The largest decline was observed in Slovenia (-83%), followed by Slovakia and Croatia (both -82%). Also, 20 EU Member States recorded a reduction of 70% or more and four Member States (including Greece) recorded reductions of between 65% and 70%. The lowest decrease was recorded in Luxembourg (-67%).
Non-EU passenger transport accounted for 45% of total passenger air transport in 2020. On the other hand, intra-EU transport accounted for 33% and national transport for 22%.
