In today’s meeting, held in Brussels, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Dmytro Kuleba, will also participate via video conference.
The most important measure of today’s new package of sanctions, based on a relevant Commission proposal, is the imposition of an embargo on gold markets from Russia. The Commission’s proposal also envisages strengthening export controls on dual-use and advanced technology products, i.e. those that could also be used for military purposes.
With the aforementioned measures, the EU will strengthen the alignment of sanctions with those of its partners, the seven most developed industrialized countries on the planet. The package will strengthen reporting requirements to tighten asset freezes against people on the EU’s “blacklist”.
The Commission’s proposal clarifies that the European sanctions do not in any way target the trade of agricultural products between third countries and Russia. It also clarifies the exact scope of certain financial and economic sanctions. Finally, it is proposed to extend the existing six EU sanctions packages until the next review at the end of January 2023.
