The European Union (EU) and the United Kingdom have opened antitrust investigations into whether Alphabet, the parent of Google, and Meta Platforms, the owner of Facebook, tried to illegally price digital ads.
The European Commission, the EU’s executive arm, said it and Britain’s competition body were investigating a 2018 deal known as “Jedi Blue” that came to light as part of a court case started a year and a half ago by a group of American states led by Texas.
The suit argues that Google gave Meta special terms and access to its ad server, a tool used to define ad spaces on the internet, requiring Facebook to abandon competitive technology that could undermine Google’s dominance in online ads.
Both Google and Meta challenged how the lawsuit characterized the settlement and said that Google did not grant Meta preferential treatment.
