EU approves new sanctions against Belarus over Ukraine invasion

European Union diplomats have approved new sanctions against Belarus for its support of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the French EU presidency said on Wednesday.

European diplomacy has approved new sanctions against the Belarusian population that is playing a role in the attacks on Ukraine, the presidency said on Twitter.

The sanctions will also hit “some economic sectors, in particular wood, steel and potash,” according to the statement.

An EU official said this week that one of the aims of the new sanctions on Minsk is to stop exports of any other Belarusian products to the EU, in addition to those already subject to EU sanctions imposed after President Alexander Lukashenko quelled protests after the elections in August 2020.

“These measures will be published in the EU Official Gazette for entry into force,” the presidency said in its statement, without indicating the exact time of publication.

Some of the sanctions are expected to close loopholes in existing restrictive measures.

The EU is already banning exports of potash from Belarus, a fertilizer made from potash, and petroleum products. But diplomats said Belarus still exports potash to the EU via Ukraine and has also increased its exports to the EU of oil products made from coal.
