EU-Belarus escalates tensions: Partial suspension of visa facilitation agreement

EU relations are on a tightrope – Belarus. The Commission responds to the ongoing hybrid attack launched by the country’s regime by announcing a partial suspension of the implementation of the EU-Belarus visa facilitation agreement.

The suspension covers the provisions exempting them from the requirements for proof of documents, regulating the issuance of multiple-entry visas and reducing visa application fees, as they apply to officials of the Belarussian regime. This decision will not affect ordinary citizens of Belarus, who will continue to enjoy the same benefits under the visa facilitation agreement they currently enjoy.

On September 29, the Commission, as reported by the Athens News Agency, had proposed measures against the Lukashenko regime, in response to the instrumentalization of people for political purposes.

“It simply came to our notice then Belarussian regime’s efforts to destabilize the EU and its Member States facilitating illegal immigration for political purposes, as well as the decision of 28 June to suspend the EU-Belarus readmission agreement. At the same time, it had pointed out that it concerns specific categories of people who are related to the regime “, the Commission states in its relevant announcement.
