Energy ministers from eleven European Union countries led by Austria formed an alliance to fend off efforts mainly by of Francebut also of some other countries, which have as aim to include nuclear power in the EU’s renewable energy plan.
The governments of the eleven countries, which call themselves “Friends of Renewable Energy”they aim to fend off the attempts of a rival alliance -led by France and also involving the Czech Republic, Poland and others- which wants nuclear energy to be included in numerous EU policies.
Austria, Belgium, Estonia, Denmark, Germany, Ireland, Latvia, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal and Spain attended the meeting to coordinate ahead of the upcoming negotiations.
A rival meeting of pro-nuclear ministers, convened by French Energy Minister Agnes Panier-Rinachet, was also held on Tuesday morning.
On Wednesday, EU countries are expected to agree on tougher European targets to expand renewable energy by 2030 – an important part of EU plans aimed at reducing carbon dioxide emissions and moving away from Russian gas.
France is leading a campaign to recognize his contribution “low carbon hydrogen” -hydrogen produced by nuclear power- in meeting renewable energy targets. Pro-nuclear countries have made a similar demand regarding a law to regulate the gas market, which ministers will discuss today.
THE Austrian Energy Minister Leonore Gevesler stated that the 11 countries reject the attempt to link these two files. “The group is calling for ambitious targets in the Renewable Energy Act to provide a clear mandate to investors and consumers,” it said in a statement. “The strategic European goal of becoming less dependent on energy imports and massively expanding local and renewable energy should be achieved,” said Gevesler.
France, along with Romania, Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic, argue that EU policies should do more to recognize the contribution of carbon-free nuclear power to climate goals.
