EU candidate Serbia should support sanctions against Russia, says German chancellor

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said he hoped the sanctions against Russia would be supported by all candidate countries for membership of the European Union (EU), including Serbia.

“It is a terrible and senseless war that was started by an imperialist vision of Russia. That is why it is so important that the European Union, and all of us, stand in solidarity with Ukraine and help it defend itself against this attack,” Scholz told Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic during a joint press conference in Belgrade on Friday. (10).

“Sanctions will not simply disappear when the guns are silenced,” Scholz said. “Russia must come to an understanding with Ukraine,” he added.

“It is clear that an agreement must also clarify the issue of recognition of Kosovo, because it is inconceivable that two countries that do not recognize each other become members of the EU,” Scholz said during an earlier press conference with Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti. , in Pristina on Friday.

“Today I ask once again from both sides a clear commitment to this dialogue. Everyone should get close, no matter how difficult it is sometimes,” she added.

Vucic rejected “threats” and “pressure” against Serbia when it comes to recognition and dialogue with Kosovo.

Kosovo and Serbia are both aspirants for EU membership. Scholz said the EU council will make a decision on Ukraine’s accelerated EU membership following the recommendation of the bloc’s commission.
