The European Union (EU) challenged China at the World Trade Organization (WTO) on Friday (18) by accusing Beijing of preventing the bloc’s technology companies from seeking foreign courts to protect their patents.
“EU companies have the right to seek justice…when their technology is used illegally. That is why we are launching consultations at the WTO today,” said the bloc’s executive vice president, Valdis Dombrovskis, in a statement.
The latest move by the EU came just weeks after Brussels launched a separate case at the WTO to investigate allegations that China is illegally punishing Lithuania for its stance on Taiwan.
According to the EU, Chinese courts have threatened to impose hefty fines and taken other legal steps against European tech companies to prevent them from taking their grievances to other courts abroad.
These legal actions have been called for by Chinese manufacturers seeking “cheaper or even free access” to European technologies, the EU says.
