EU chief diplomat calls for Middle East ceasefire after Sinwar’s death

The European Union’s foreign policy chief said this Saturday (19) that a ceasefire is a priority in the Middle East and that the assassination of Hamas leader Yaya Sinwar by Israeli forces could increase the chances of this becoming a reality.

“After Sinwar’s assassination, a new perspective has opened up and we have to use it to reach a ceasefire, free the (Israeli) hostages and seek a political perspective,” Josep Borrell, the EU’s top diplomat, told reporters. reporters at a meeting of G7 defense ministers in Naples.

He also said the UN peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, known as Unifil, needs to be strengthened, having come under attack in clashes between Israel and its Lebanese enemy, Hezbollah.

“UN forces must be respected throughout the world… perhaps Unifil’s mission will have to be reviewed, but the first thing to do is a ceasefire,” said Borrell, adding that it will be up to the United Nations Security Council make decisions about Unifil.
