German Economy Minister Robert Habeck (Greens) described as “a good first step” the willingness of China and the European Union to start negotiations on tariffs on imported Chinese electric cars. Previously, however, Chinese Premier Li Chiang had canceled at the last minute his meeting with the German minister, who was already in China. In an interview on German public broadcaster ARD’s first channel, Mr Habeck stressed that “we are finally talking to each other and not about each other” and reiterated that EU tariffs are not “punishment” but work to prevent distortions of competition. “Unity in the EU is essential,” Robert Habeck said, adding that Germany does not want tariffs. “People are interested in markets that are fair and open.
