The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, informed this Sunday (27th) that the European Union (EU) will ban flights, impose new sanctions on Belarus and ban Russian propaganda channels. The measures are retaliation for the government of the president Vladimir Putinwhich this week initiated an invasion against the territory of Ukraine.
“First, we are closing EU airspace to Russian-owned, Russian-registered or Russian-controlled aircraft. They will not be able to land, take off or fly over the territory of the European Union”, he said. “Including the oligarchs’ private jets.”
In this way, European Union airspace will be closed to Russia.
As a second measure, the European Union intends to propose a new package of sanctions on Belarus. Ursula says she will introduce restrictive measures to the most important sectors of the Eastern European country, such as exports of iron ore, tobacco and steel.
The move comes a day after the president of the European Commission stated that selected Russian banks were excluded from the global payments system, the Swift. “This is a watershed moment for our Union,” she said in a brief statement.
And a third measure will also be taken by the European Union. Ursula declared that Russian state-owned companies Today and Sputnik, and their subsidiaries, “will no longer be able to spread their lies to justify Putin’s war.”
“We are developing tools to banish their toxic and harmful disinformation in Europe.”
After months of military escalation and intemperance on the Ukrainian border, Russia attacked the Eastern European country. At dawn on Thursday (24), Russian forces began bombing various regions of the country.
What was seen in the following hours, however, was an attack on almost the entire Ukrainian territory, with explosions in several cities, including the capital Kiev.
At least 64 civilians have been killed since Russia invaded Ukraine, the UN said on Sunday.
The agency’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reported “at least 240 civilian casualties, including at least 64 people killed” in the fighting that has erupted since Moscow launched the attack on Ukraine.
This attack on the former Soviet neighbor threatens to destabilize Europe and involve the United States. Russia has been tightening its military grip around Ukraine for the past year, amassing tens of thousands of troops, equipment and artillery at the country’s gates.
In recent weeks, diplomatic efforts to defuse tensions have been unsuccessful.
