EU Commission rejects supporting Georgia’s bid to join the bloc

THE Georgia must meet certain conditions before being granted membership candidate status. European Union the European Commission said on Friday (17) when rejecting the country’s request.

“Candidate status should be granted once several priorities have been addressed,” the Commission said in a statement.

“To succeed, the country must now come together politically to chart a clear path towards structural reform in line with the European Union – a path that concretely defines the necessary reforms, integrates civil society and benefits from broad political support.” said the statement from the president of the bloc’s executive, Ursula von der Leyen in a press conference.

The reply to the country’s application for candidacy was given on the same day that the Commission declared the support for the designation of Moldova and Ukraine as “Candidate States” for entry into the bloc.

Von de Leyen stated that support is conditional on carrying out a series of reforms in the country. “In the Commission’s view, Ukraine has clearly demonstrated the country’s aspiration and determination to meet European standards,” he said.

In the Commission’s assessment, the country is “well advanced” in terms of achieving stability of democratic institutions, the rule of law, human rights and respect for minorities, in addition to maintaining a good economic record and demonstrating resilience and financial stability.

Ukraine submitted its application to join the bloc four days after the start of the Russian invasion. The country has demanded diplomatic, financial and military assistance from European nations in confrontation with Russia . On social media, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky celebrated the decision.
