The European Commission warned on Friday of “serious consequences” that could lead to a suspension of the Northern Ireland Protocol on EU-Britain relations at the end of a meeting between negotiators in Brussels.
“This would be a rejection of the European Union’s efforts to find a consensual solution” in implementing the agreement, European Commissioner Maros Sefkovic warned after meeting with British Brexit minister David Frost.
London has repeatedly threatened to activate Article 16 of this protocol, which allows the suspension of certain provisions, especially in the event of “major financial difficulties”.
The British accuse the Northern Irish protocol of causing supply difficulties in the province.
“We hear a lot about Article 16. There is no doubt that activating this article would have serious consequences for Northern Ireland as it would lead to instability and uncertainty,” he said.
He said he would travel to London on November 12 to resume talks.
