EU Covid-19 Passports and Vaccines Helped European Tourism

The implementation of vaccine passports and the increase in population immunization have helped tourism in the European Union to recover faster from the pandemic of Covid-19 than any other part of the world during the third quarter of 2021, reveals a UN report released this Sunday (28).

International tourist arrivals increased by 58% worldwide between July and September compared to the same period in 2020, according to UN World Tourism Organization – although it was 64% below the same pre-pandemic period in 2019.

Europe registered the best relative performance in this period, with international arrivals 53% lower compared to the same 2019 summer season.

“The increase in demand was driven by increased traveler confidence amid rapid progress on vaccinations and the easing of entry restrictions in many destinations,” the report said.

“In Europe, the EU Covid Digital Certificate helped facilitate free movement within the European Union, releasing large pent-up demand after many months of travel restrictions.”

Between January and September, total tourist arrivals around the world were still 76 percent below pre-pandemic levels, with uneven performance in different regions, the report said.

European arrivals were only 8% below the same period in 2020 in the first nine months of 2021, but 69% less than in 2019.

The Americas registered the strongest results between January and September, with arrivals of 1% compared to 2020, although still 65% below 2019 levels for the same period.

Meanwhile, the Caribbean registered the strongest results, with arrivals increasing 55% in the first nine months of 2021 compared to the same period in 2020, although still 38% below 2019.

Still, the pace of recovery in the tourism sector globally in the third quarter remained uneven, the report noted.

“This is due to varying degrees of mobility restrictions, vaccination rates and traveler confidence.”
