EU: € 50 million in additional humanitarian aid to support vulnerable refugees in Turkey

The European Commission has announced that it will allocate € 50 million to support vulnerable refugees and their host communities in Turkey.

According to the Commission announcement, humanitarian aid will be made available to specialized health care services and will help address protection issues such as legal advice, psychosocial support, and access to political documentation.

This funding is in addition to the EU Emergency Social Protection Network (ESSN), which currently supports more than 1.5 million people in Turkey through financial assistance. ESSN helps them pay for what they need most, such as rent, transportation, food or medicine.

Crisis Management Commissioner Janes Lenarsic said: “People’s eyes are on Ukraine, but we will not forget the refugees in Turkey, many of whom have been displaced for more than a decade. The most vulnerable of them have “The European Union will continue to provide humanitarian aid to refugees in Turkey and provide a lifeline for those most in need.”

The cost of living and lack of access to a regular income make it difficult for vulnerable families to make ends meet, the Commission said, noting that Turkey has made commendable efforts to provide them with access to basic services, including education and health care, but many face deeper debt and poverty due to the side effects of COVID-19 and the devaluation of the Turkish lira.
