Energy ministers from European Union countries will discuss on Monday (28) preparations for possible disruptions in energy supplies and measures to strengthen gas stocks after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The invasion of Ukraine by Russia, Europe’s main gas supplier, has heightened concerns about the disruption of energy supplies and heightened the debate over the dependence of European Union countries on imported fossil fuels.
EU ministers will “take stock of possible further actions in terms of safeguarding supplies, using strategic oil reserves, managing gas reserves” at the emergency meeting, according to a preparatory note from France, which is currently chairing meetings of EU ministers.
“We have to prepare for all possibilities,” said France’s minister of ecological transition, Barbara Pompili, upon arriving at the session.
The EU has enough gas and oil inventories to withstand short-term disruptions, she said. “However, there is a problem with long-term supplies.”
The ministers will also discuss possible assistance to Ukraine’s energy sector and the acceleration of a planned connection of Ukraine’s electricity grid with Europe’s, which would make it more independent from Russia.
