The European Union (EU) Foreign Policy chief expressed his support for an emergency UN Security Council (United Nations) meeting following an attack on the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant in Ukraine by Russian forces. The EU’s leader of the area warned of the possibility that the attacks could have serious consequences.
“Russian attacks near Ukraine’s nuclear power plants could have catastrophic consequences. They must stop immediately,” Borrell tweeted this Friday (4). “The bombing and resulting fire at the power plant [Zaporizhzhia] could put all of Josep Borrell in Europe at risk,” he added.
On Friday, Ukraine’s State Nuclear Regulation Inspectorate said Russian forces had “occupied” the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant.
According to a statement shared by Energoatom – Ukraine’s nuclear power operator – via Telegram on Friday, the plant’s staff continues to work on the power units, “ensuring the stable operation of the nuclear facilities”.

In the early hours of Friday morning, local time (around 21:00 on Thursday, the 3rd, Brasília time), Russian military forces took over the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in southeastern Ukraine. A fire has hit the plant. The fire started in a training building outside the main reactor complex, according to Ukraine’s State Emergency Service.
Soon after the occurrence was confirmed, there were fears that the bombing would cause a leak of radioactive material, which has not been reported so far. According to Ukrainian authorities, a training building outside the plant’s perimeter was hit.
Plant spokesman Andrii Tuz said the plant did not suffer any critical damage, although only one power generation unit out of six is operating. He further stated that at least one power generating unit at the nuclear power plant was hit during the conflict. “A lot of technical equipment was hit,” the spokesperson explained to CNN.
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said “essential” equipment at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant site was not affected by the fire, according to Ukrainian officials. According to the agency, “factory employees [estão] taking mitigating actions”.
The director of Zaporizhzhia told Ukraine 24 television that radiation safety had been established at the site.
