The first meeting of Ministers responsible for Integration, organized in Vienna, was attended by the Deputy Minister of Immigration and Asylum Ms. Sofia Vultepsi. Hosted by the Austrian federal minister Ms. Susanna Raab, ministers and deputy ministers from all EU member states laid the foundations for the creation of a European forum with the aim of exchanging views, good practices and shaping an environment of peaceful coexistence, in the light of old and new challenges.
Ms. Voultepsi presented to her counterparts a series of innovations that have been implemented recently in Greece and have the support of the European Commission (DG HOME): Inclusion of the pre-accession stage in the New National Strategy in collaboration with the European Support Service for Asylum (euaa), familiarization with the European way of life and gender equality, strengthening protection in cooperation with the High Commission, creating, in cooperation with UNICEF, an educational program for a smooth transition from informal to formal education and public school , actions to combat trafficking, eliminate all forms of violence and deal with natural disasters.
Ms. Voultepsi also informed her colleagues that Greece – the only country that utilizes funds from the Recovery Fund for Integration is starting, in collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the large training program in critical sectors of the Greek economy where it is presented demand for workers (agricultural, tourism, construction and manufacturing).
Of particular interest was the presentation of the Greek protection system for unaccompanied minors, as well as the new HELIOS JUNIOR program, for the smooth transition of unaccompanied minors to adulthood, which is part of the European AMIF Fund.
In their meeting, the European ministers also analyzed the new refugee crisis caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine with the most important housing problem, which is a condition for a smooth transition to the labor market.
Ms. Vultepsi informed that she made the decision to expand the HELIOS program implemented by the IOM, so that it also includes Ukrainian refugees, who are now covered by the payment of rent, even in the houses where they are already hosted, without having to move.
He also proposed the creation of a Network of European Ministers responsible for Integration and their next meeting in Bucharest is already planned for September.
