EU is ready for difficult negotiations with USA, says von der Leyen

The European Union will be ready for harsh negotiations with the United States to protect their own interests and will be pragmatic when trying to find solutions, the European Commission chairman, Ursula von de Leyen, said, while Europe prepares for possible new US tariffs.

US President Donald Trump said over the weekend that he will soon impose tariffs on imports from the European Union. In an informal meeting in Brussels on Monday (3), the 27 bloc leaders discussed how to deal with the evolving relationship with Washington.

“There is a long time at the game on both sides,” said Von Der Leyen at an EU ambassador conference on Tuesday (4).

“There are jobs, companies and industries here and in the United States that depend on the transatlantic partnership,” she said in Brussels.

The committee chairman added that Europe will be in negotiations with Washington.

“Our first priority now is to work in the many areas where interests converge,” she said, pointing to critical supply chains and emerging technologies.

“We will be ready for difficult negotiations when necessary and to find solutions when possible, to solve any complaints and establish the foundations for a stronger partnership,” she said.

“We will be open and pragmatic how to achieve this. But we will make it equally clear that we will always protect our own interests. ”

Von der Leyen said the European Union must recognize the realities of global politics.

“The view of a world tending to increasingly cooperation and hyperglobalization has become outdated,” she said. “Europe must deal with the world as we find it,” he said.
