EU: Joint supply of gas, LNG and hydrogen for next winter

European Union leaders will agree during this week’s summit on the joint supply of gas, liquefied natural gas and hydrogen for next winter, according to the draft joint announcement.

The invasion of Ukraine by Russia, Europe’s first gas supplier, has sent energy prices soaring to a record high, forcing the European Union to cut off Russian gas supplies this year, a move that will require a jump in imports from other suppliers, such as Qatar and the United States.

“In view of next winter, the Member States and the European Commission will work together urgently to co-supply gas, LNG and hydrogen,” European leaders said in a draft joint communiqué announced on March 24 and 25.

The European Commission last year proposed a system for the joint procurement of strategic gas reserves by the European Union, a solution proposed by some Member States as a way to create a safe deposit box against possible supply disruptions.

Brussels has said it will help EU countries start co-supplying gas this year and is expected to propose rules this week that require European countries to cover 90% of their gas reserves before winter. each year. Today’s gas reserves are at 26%.

According to the draft joint statement, it states that European countries have agreed to coordinate their actions to cover stocks and this will be done “as soon as possible”.

European leaders will consider new measures to protect consumers from energy price spikes and discuss how to optimize the functioning of energy markets. They will ask the Commission to take the necessary steps to provide this protection, in accordance with the plan.
