EU Leaders In Turkey On April 6 To Meet With Erdogan

European Commission Presidents Ursula von der Leyen and Council Presidents Charles Michel will travel to Turkey on Tuesday April 6 to meet President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, their spokespersons announced on Twitter on Monday March 29. The European Union said it was ready to reconnect with Ankara after months of tensions in the eastern Mediterranean, but set conditions on the Turkish president, notably calling for the continuation of “the current de-escalation”, during a summit of 27 par videoconference Thursday.

The leaders, who planned to take stock in June, approved a “gradual, conditional and reversible approach to strengthen cooperation in a number of areas of common interest,” according to the statement approved by the leaders. The EU is ready to initiate the modernization of the Customs Union, to resume high-level dialogue and to negotiate visa facilities for Turkish nationals.

A desire for appeasement shown by Erdogan

In the absence of progress, a report by the head of European diplomacy Josep Borrell cites several options, including sanctions for the tourism sector. Turkey had criticized the conclusions of the EU summit, while promising to respond with “positive steps” to any gestures by the 27 member states. The Turkish president has shown a desire for appeasement at the end of 2020, after strong tensions with the EU linked to several Turkish gas exploration missions in Greek and Cypriot waters in the eastern Mediterranean.

Turkey, a member of NATO, is also a partner of the EU for the control of migratory flows. Ankara has agreed to control its borders with the EU to prevent irregular crossings of migrants and refugees through its territory and for the past 10 years has welcomed nearly 4 million Syrians who have fled the conflict in their country. The EU, for its part, is preparing the continuation of funding for the Syrians in Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan.
