In a speech broadcast on Wednesday (22), Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky spoke about talks he had with 11 European leaders, asking for their support on the eve of an EU summit where a decision will be taken on Ukraine’s candidate status in the block.
The question of Ukraine’s candidacy for the European Union will be decided by the European Council this Thursday (23) and Friday (24).
The head of the European Council, Charles Michel, said that this is a “decisive moment” for the bloc. Still according to Michel, it is very possible that the leaders will grant candidate status to Ukraine and Moldova and “will express a clear and strong European perspective” for both nations.
European Parliament chief Roberta Metsola also said she saw Thursday as a “historic” day, expressing her “hope” that Ukraine’s candidate status would be given the green light.
At a separate event on Wednesday in Canada, the Ukrainian president also said he believed all European Union members would support their country in its goal of joining the bloc.
