EU mobilizes emergency stocks for chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear threats to Ukraine

At the request of the Government of Ukraine for medical equipment, protective equipment and special equipment for public health hazards, such as chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear threats (CBRN), the European Commission has mobilized its new rescEU emergency stocks.

The equipment provided by the EU includes 300,000 special protective suits, 5,600 liters of disinfectants and 850 pieces of equipment for disinfection work. Given that hospitals in Ukraine are in urgent need of medical equipment, the EU is also donating patient monitoring screens, infusion pumps and respirators, as well as protective equipment for medical staff, such as masks and aprons.

This assistance, with a total economic value of € 11.3 million, will be provided to Ukraine from EU emergency reserves, hosted in Romania, Hungary, Sweden, Germany, Greece and Denmark.

Crisis Management Commissioner Janes Lenarcic said that “Russia’s unwarranted war and attacks on healthcare facilities have put Ukraine’s health systems under severe pressure. For the past four months we have been working on a 24-hour basis to “Ukraine’s demands for special equipment and humanitarian supplies. Already 30 countries have donated goods to Ukraine through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, but given the enormous medical needs caused by the ongoing war, we have mobilized rescEU strategic reserves.”

The EU Emergency Response Coordination Center is in constant contact with the Ukrainian authorities to provide further assistance based on the specific needs reported by Ukraine.
