EU: No solution to Russian oil embargo – Hungary continues blockade

Hungary has continued to block a European Union proposal to ban Russian oil imports by delaying a full package of sanctions aimed at President Vladimir Putin over the war in Ukraine, according to sources familiar with the talks. Bloomberg agency.

A meeting of the 27 EU ambassadors ended today without an agreement, and talks are expected to continue in the coming days, said the individuals, who asked not to be named because the talks are private.

The EU proposal aims to ban crude oil and refined fuels for the next six months by early January. Hungary, Slovakia and the Czech Republic are requesting extensions to comply with the measures due to their heavy dependence on Russian energy.

The EU sought to complete the process by the time of the military parade on May 9, Russia’s Victory Day, which commemorates the end of World War II and the domination of Nazi Germany.

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell has said that a meeting of EU foreign ministers will be held next week if the bloc countries do not reach an agreement on an oil embargo against Russia by Saturday.
