EU prepares for possible total cut off of Russian gas pipeline Nord Stream 1

The European Commission is planning for all scenarios concerning gas flows to Europe via the Russian Nord Stream 1 pipeline, including the possibility that deliveries will not restart next Thursday (21), when the pipeline maintenance finish, said a spokesperson.

“We are working on all possible scenarios, and one of the scenarios that we have to take into account in contingency planning is the possibility that flows will not restart,” a spokesman for the European Union’s executive body said at a press conference on Tuesday. fair (19).

O Wall Street Journal reported earlier that the Commission did not expect Nord Stream 1 to restart after its 10-day annual maintenance, citing European Budget Commissioner Johannes Hahn.

“We are working on the assumption that it will not reopen,” Hahn told reporters in Singapore, according to the paper.

Asked about those comments, the spokesman said the Commission was basing its contingency planning for gas supplies this winter on the assumption that there could be a complete interruption of Russian gas flows.

“We are working on the worst case scenario. And that scenario, and the assumption, therefore, is that Gazprom would not supply more gas to Europe… We are basing our winter readiness plans on the worst case scenario,” he said.

The Commission will publish plans on Wednesday on how EU countries can reduce gas demand at this time, as Brussels braces for further drops in Russian gas deliveries and attempts to fill up gas storage before winter.

An outline of the EU plan, seen by Reuters, would suggest that countries roll out financial incentives for companies to reduce their use of gas. There was also a provision for using state aid to encourage industries and power plants to switch to other fuels.

EU officials said the Commission was also considering setting targets for countries to reduce their gas use, but that it was still under discussion whether those targets would be mandatory or voluntary.

Reuters reported on Monday that Russia’s Gazprom had told customers in Europe it could not guarantee gas supplies because of “extraordinary” circumstances, raising fears that Moscow would not be able to restart the Nord Stream 1 pipeline on Thursday. fair.
