EU renews economic sanctions against Russia for six months over Ukraine crisis

The Council of the European Union announced this Thursday (13) that it will extend economic sanctions against Russia for another six months due to the crisis with Ukraine. The measures will be valid until July 31, 2022.

According to the statement, among the actions is the limitation of access to European Union markets for some Russian banks and companies, as well as the ban on some forms of financial assistance from banks in the bloc.

These sanctions were first introduced on July 31, 2014, in response to “Russia’s actions that have destabilized the situation in Ukraine”.

According to the European Union, the ban on the “import, export or direct or indirect transfer of all defence-related material” is also in force, extending to “dual-use” goods for military use.

The measure also affects Russia’s access to technologies that can be used in the energy sector, for oil exploration and production, for example.

The statement further says that this was decided after Russia failed to implement what was decided in the Minsk Agreement, which took place on December 16, 2021. Thus, the extension of the sanctions was unanimously decided.

Finally, the Council states that “diplomatic, individual restrictive measures (asset freeze and travel restrictions) were implemented in response to the illegal annexation of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol by Russia and the deliberate destabilization of Ukraine”.
