The European Union has announced that its member countries have agreed to impose sanctions against four individuals and two entities linked to violent actions by Israeli settlers against Palestinians in the West Bank. According to APE-MPE, the two entities are Lehava, a radical, far-right, racist Jewish organization and Hilltop Youth, which is considered hard-line and extremist, as the European Council said in its statement. Sanctions will be imposed on the two top representatives of Hilltop Youth, Meir Ettinger and Elisa Gered. These persons and entities are “responsible for serious human rights violations against Palestinians,” the Council said. Israel captured the West Bank in the 1967 war, and the area has remained under military occupation ever since, with Jewish settlements constantly expanding. The Palestinians want the West Bank as part of their future, independent state that would also include the Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem.
