David Sassoli was a man of respect, European Council President Charles Michel said at a memorial service in Strasbourg, adding that he was a political leader committed to EU values.
“We have gathered tonight to pay tribute to the President of the European Parliament, to a political leader, to a proud European, but first and foremost he is the man we are saying goodbye to,” said Michel.
At the same time, he referred to the first meeting he had with David Sassoli.
“From the beginning, I was marked by his relaxed, generous attitude, completely focused on others, and after that smiling face, this smile, his trademark. David, the smile does not lie: it says a lot about “It says a lot about your sincere and firm beliefs. It says your strengths and your doubts,” said Charles Michel.
He spoke about the journalist David Sassoli, who, as he noted, practiced the profession with passion.
“You have done your part and much more to keep Europe in place,” said the President of the European Council.
