EU slams Russia for adding five member states to ‘unfriendly countries’

The European Union deplores the decision of the Russian government on 20 July 2022 to add five EU member states – Greece, Denmark, Croatia, Slovakia and Slovenia – to the list of countries to which the measure “Response to unfriendly actions by foreign states” will apply ” emphasizes the High Representative, Z. Borel, in a written statement on behalf of the EU. It adds that the EU considers the allegations of hostile actions to be baseless and unacceptable, calling on Russia to withdraw all such registrations.

This decision is another step by Russia towards the continued escalation of tensions with the European Union and its member states. The previous decree establishing the list of so-called “unfriendly” states is incompatible with the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations of 1961. The EU calls on Russia to review its decision and fully respect the Vienna Convention, Mr. .Borrell.

The High Representative concludes by saying that the EU continues to call on Russia to immediately stop its aggression against Ukraine and all other violations of International Law, including violations of its own international obligations and commitments.
