Omicron is likely to dominate Europe by mid-January, according to the Commission. The leaders are expected to stress the importance of further expanding covid-19 vaccination and, above all, booster doses. Another issue on the agenda of the 27 leaders is immigration, following the recent influx of many migrants to the borders of three European countries bordering Belarus, which Brussels accuses of orchestrating a crisis in retaliation for Western sanctions against it. At the same time, EU countries want to reduce migration flows as a whole. The leaders of the bloc want an action plan to be implemented “without delay” with a number of countries of origin and transit of migrants and call on the Commission to ensure that “the necessary funding will be available”, according to a draft of the summit decisions.
