EU Summit: Ukraine, Moldova on the accession path

The status of a candidate country in Ukraine and Moldova for EU membership and under conditions that must be met in advance, in Georgia, is expected to be given by the “27”.

This is the first step in a very long process and indeed an uncertain outcome, given that third countries, such as Turkey, have received this status since the 1990s and are still outside the EU.

In order for negotiations to begin, there must be another unanimous decision of the European Council, after the candidate countries have already met a number of criteria in relation to the rule of law, the market economy and human rights.

European leaders are also expected to decide today to speed up the accession process of the Western Balkan countries, but it is considered very difficult to set a date for the start of accession negotiations with Northern Macedonia, due to its dispute with Bulgaria over ethnic and Bulgarian differences. This also entices Albania because its accession process is politically linked to that of Northern Macedonia. European leaders met this morning with the leaders of the Western Balkan countries.

Turkish aggression on the table

In relation to Turkey, it is expected that tonight at dinner Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will inform the partners about Ankara’s aggressive behavior, while there will be a relevant reference to the conclusions of the meeting. In the draft conclusions, the European Council expresses its deep concern at Turkey’s repeated recent actions and statements. “Turkey must respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all EU member states,” the statement said.

The other topics of the summit are the economic situation and the problem of inflation due to the war in Ukraine, while tomorrow the leaders of the Eurozone are meeting, who are expected to welcome the adoption of the euro by Ukraine on January 1, 2023.
