European Union (EU) ambassadors agreed on Monday to examine proposals from Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova to join the EU, starting the long accession process.
In a tweet published on Monday (7), the French EU Presidency said that the 27 permanent representatives of European countries “invited the European Commission to present an opinion on each of the EU membership applications submitted by Ukraine, Georgia and Moldavia”.
This starts a process that could take years to complete before the three former Soviet countries are considered candidate countries for EU membership.
Countries that wish to be part of the European Union must meet strict “accession criteria”, which involve complex social, legal and political reforms and are “essential conditions that all candidate countries must satisfy in order to become a member state”, according to with EU rules.
The EU’s “absorption capacity for new members” is also part of the consideration to allow new countries to join the bloc. Meanwhile, European Council President Charles Michel said in a tweet on Monday that Ukraine’s membership offer will be discussed in the “coming days”.
At the end of February, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed an official application for Ukraine to join the European Union (EU).
Zelensky urged the bloc to allow Ukraine to become a member immediately through a special procedure, as it defends itself from invading Russian forces.
On Twitter, the Prime Minister of Ukraine stated that “this is the choice of Ukraine and the Ukrainian people. We more than deserve it.”
