EU to deliver radiation prevention pills to Ukraine

The European Union (EU) will donate 5.5 million potassium iodide tablets to Ukraine to protect people from potential radiation exposure, in what the EU Commission called a “preventive safety measure” on Tuesday. ).

The tablets would be used in “limited scenarios to prevent inhaled or ingested radioactive iodine from being absorbed by the thyroid,” the commission said in a statement.

The pills were requested by the Ukrainian government to “increase the level of protection” around the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, according to the commission.

“No nuclear power plant should be used as a stage for war. It is unacceptable that civilian lives are put at risk. All military action around the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant must stop immediately,” added EU Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarčič.

A team from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) arrived in the Ukrainian capital ahead of a planned visit to the plant in southeastern Ukraine later this week.

Members of the IAEA delegation were seen by the CNN at his hotel in Kiev on Tuesday.
