Contact with Elon Musk had a while ago the Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton who pointed out to the head of Twitter that the platform must implement a transparent user policy, to protect free speech, tackle misinformation decisively and limit targeted advertising.
In particular, as the relevant announcement states, after the meeting on May 9, in which Elon Musk committed to comply with the new EU legislation on the online platform, today European Commissioner Thierry Breton and his CEO Twitter Elon Musk discussed the company’s readiness to comply with the new EU law on digital services.
“I welcome Elon Musk’s statements of intent to prepare Twitter 2.0 for the Digital Services Act (DSA). I’m glad to hear that her has read carefully and considers it a reasonable approach to implement on a global basis”said Mr. Breton stressing however that there is “still huge work ahead”.
Breton and Musk agreed that the Commission services will carry out a stress test at Twitter’s headquarters in early 2023, which will allow the platform to aim for compliance even before the legal deadlines and prepare for an extensive independent audit, as foreseen by the DSA.
The Digital Services Act (DSA), which came into force in November 2022, creates new obligations for online platforms to reduce harm and address risks online. These rules will give users new protection and businesses legal certainty across the single market. In case of non-compliance, companies face fines of up to 6% of global turnover and even a ban from operating in the EU single market in case of repeated serious violations.
