EU tries to persuade China not to help Moscow deal with Western sanctions

The EU is now trying to persuade China to refuse to help Moscow deal with Western sanctions during a virtual summit in which Beijing seeks to renew its economic ties with Europe, where war is raging in Ukraine.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Charles Michel, speaking on behalf of the Member States, spoke for at least two hours this morning (Brussels time) with Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang.

A conversation between the two European leaders and President Xi Jinping was scheduled for 14:00 (local time, 15:00 Greek time).

“On Ukraine, Li Keqiang has stated that China opposes both hot and cold wars, divisions between coalitions, and refuses to take sides,” Wang Lutong, who is in charge of Europe in China, wrote on Twitter. Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Chinese and European officials “agreed to work together to maintain world peace, stability and prosperity” and “conduct a dialogue on energy and food security,” Wang added.

For the EU, the main purpose of the summit is to urge China not to over-support Russia.
