The situation in Ukraine was discussed by the head of the special office of the President of the Commission Bjorn Seibert and the US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan.
They coordinated transatlantic preparations for a strong sanctions package, which would grow rapidly in the event of further Russian military aggression in Ukraine.
They also discussed concrete measures to support the Ukrainian economy.
In addition, they exchanged views on the EU-US Strategic Partnership on Energy Security and the additional steps to be taken to prepare for any future cuts in energy supply in Europe. Energy co-operation between the EU and the US is intensifying, according to a joint statement by Presidents Joe Biden and Ursula von der Leyen, following the US-EU Energy Council meeting in Washington last week, the commission said in a statement.
Finally, Seibert and Sullivan agreed to step up joint work on the COVID-19 pandemic and global health security, as well as on global economic recovery and international infrastructure cooperation through the Global Gateway and the Build Back Better World initiative.
