The European Union (EU) envoy to Moscow on Tuesday urged Russia to refrain from “scaling measures and rhetoric” about what Moscow calls “anti-Russian restrictions” on goods transiting between Kaliningrad and the rest of Russian territory, an EU spokesman said.
“He conveyed our position on Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and explained that Lithuania is implementing EU sanctions and there is no blockade, and urged them to refrain from escalating measures and rhetoric,” said spokesman Peter Stano.
Russia’s Foreign Ministry, which on Tuesday summoned the bloc’s ambassador to Moscow, called for transit through the region to be restored “immediately” and vowed to retaliate if the situation does not improve.
EU member Lithuania closed a railway corridor from Russia to its exclave of certain basic goods, including building materials, metals and coal in response to new EU sanctions that took effect on Saturday.
