EU “war” with Poland and Polexit warnings

They are in the “trenches” European Union and Poland, in the wake of the decision of the Polish Constitutional Court, which yesterday, Thursday (7/10) ruled that certain articles of the EU Treaties are incompatible with the Constitution of the country and undermine its national sovereignty.

In a statement, the commission said the decision “raises many concerns”. “We will analyze in detail the decision of the Constitutional Court of Poland and decide on the next steps,” it said. “The Commission will not hesitate to use its powers under the Treaties to ensure the uniform application and integrity of Union law,” it said.

In addition, the Commission states in its communication that “EU law takes precedence over national law, including constitutional provisions” and that “all judgments of the European Court of Justice are binding on all the authorities of the Member States, including national courts”.

EU – Poland: “Bell” for “Polexit”

“By declaring that the EU Treaties are incompatible with Polish law, the illegal Polish Constitutional Court has set the country on the path to Polexit,” the European People’s Party (EPP) group in a statement to the European Parliament said in a statement.

“It is difficult to believe the Polish authorities and the PiS party when they claim that they do not want to end Poland’s accession to the EU. Their actions are going in the opposite direction. Enough. The Polish government has lost. This is an attack on the EU as a whole“Said MEP Gerun Lenaers, a spokesman for the EPP Group on Justice and Home Affairs, following a ruling by the Polish Constitutional Court that challenged the supremacy of EU law.

The verdict states that the verdict of the Polish Constitutional Court was expressed at the request of the Prime Minister of Poland Mateusz Morawiecki. “With this request, Morawiecki not only legitimized an illegal judicial system in Poland, but also challenged the very basis of the European Union. “And he did it despite the calls of the whole democratic world not to do it,” Lenaers said.

“EU Member States must not stand idly by when the rule of law continues to be dismantled by the Polish government. Neither can the European Commission. Our money cannot fund governments that ridicule and reject our commonly agreed rules. We must consider the consequences and the European Commission must immediately use all available tools not to sponsor the emperors in Warsaw “, concludes the announcement of the EPP, as reported by APE-MPE.

“There is a risk of de facto exit from the EU”

Flags of the European Union

Commenting on the controversial decision, French Minister for European Affairs Clement Bonn spoke of a “blow against the EU”, while his Luxembourg counterpart Jean Asselborn warned Warsaw that he was “playing with fire”.

“It is very serious (…) there is a risk of de facto (Poland) leaving the EU,” Bonn told RMC / BFMTV. “This is an attack on the EU,” he said, adding that he did not want Poland to leave the bloc.

“Developments in Poland are very worrying (…) We must make it clear that this government in Poland is playing with fire,” warned Luxembourg Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn. “The primacy of European legislation is vital to European integration and to living together in Europe. “If this principle is annulled, Europe as we know it, as it was built on the Treaties of Rome, will cease to exist.”
