Europe demands to transfer smartphones to 5-7 years of updates and maintenance: Samsung, Apple, Huawei and others oppose

At the moment, the European Union is preparing to present a plan according to which manufacturers must support mobile phones, tablets and other devices for 5 or 7 years. However, Samsung, Apple, Huawei and other companies have already opposed such a plan.

The long support cycle for mobile phones, tablets and other digital devices is driven by environmental considerations, as frequent updates to electronic products generate large amounts of waste and waste electronic products pollute the environment.

The new regulations that are now being formulated in Europe will not only require manufacturers to provide system updates and security patches, but also provide consumers with the necessary repair parts: today, many people are forced to update their phones and tablets because manufacturers do not repair them and do not sell components.

The European Union plans to extend the service period to 5 years, while Germany wants to increase it to 7 years. At the same time, Germany requires that manufacturers initially fix prices for spare parts. After that, prices could not be increased, in addition, manufacturers should not delay deliveries and make customers wait.

The European Digital Industries Association, which represents manufacturers such as Samsung, Huawei and Apple, opposes these proposals and considers them too harsh. The association offers 2 years of operating system updates and 3 years of security updates, which is what most companies already offer.

As for spare parts, the European Digital Industry Association proposes to provide those who wish only with screens and batteries. This is because cameras, microphones, speakers, and other parts rarely fail.
